The Mayor’s Cup

Images from From US With Love

The inaugural Mayor’s Cup Sport Tournament, initiated by Knysna’s Executive Mayor, Eleanore Bouw-Spies, was held in April, 2008. The Mayor conceived the initial idea for the tournament a year ago, and sourced funding for it from “FUWL.”

Sporting codes included Cricket, Netball, Rugby, Tennis and Soccer. These codes were chosen because of their popularity in South Africa. There were 90 teams across the 5 sporting codes that participated.

This sporting event brought the community together from all economic levels. FUWL along with the Executive Mayor would like to see this become an annual event. We are currently looking for sponsors for the 2009 Mayor’s Cup.

Christmas Came Early for the Crèches in Knysna

Images from From US With Love

For many Crèches in the Knysna Municipality Christmas came early. On the 14th of May FUWL and the Knysna Education Trust handed out much needed items to many Crèches. These items would assist the Crèches and allow them to have the tools to care for the children. The Knysna Education Trust initiated this particular project and FUWL became involved to make it happen by identifying the needs of various Crèches. With FUWL’s ongoing involvement and focus on the Crèches, this day was part of what FUWL is doing to uplift needy Crèches and help bring them up to an acceptable standard. The items that FUWL purchased were TV’s, DVD players, CD players, fax machines, microwaves, CD’s, DVD’s, card games, crayons and other educational materials.

When FUWL and the representatives from the Knysna Education Trust arrived at each Crèche to hand out the various items the gratitude and thanks was evident from the teachers. The teachers of these Crèches try everyday to do the best they can with what they have. FUWL hopes to see all Crèches have the necessary tools and the basics to enable them to operate.

What FUWL hopes to achieve by giving out these items to the Crèches is to uplift and encourage the teachers, facilities, and give these children the opportunity to have access to basic necessities that they otherwise would not be able to obtain on their own.

FUWL would like to see this project grow, and with the help from people who have the same vision within the community this project will gain momentum.
